Memorial Day Memorial
The 30th of May we will be celebrating Decoration Day, or as we now know it as Memorial Day. We will be providing participation in honoring Private William Boone Keith and Private Joseph Moore Graham of the Confederacy, at Woodlawn Cemetery, Las Vegas, NV.
The site of the burial of these two Civil War Veterans is the only place in the world where a Union Soldier and a Confederate Soldier are buried side by side in the name of peace and friendship. Graham died first and Keith bought two spaces at Woodlawn Cemetery in Las Vegas, Nevada. He buried Graham there. ( Note: He also had Grahams wife’s ashes brought from the east and buried with Graham). Keith bought a granite shaft. On one side he had chiseled “ J.M. Graham and wife; on the other side, “William B. Keith, born 30 March, 1840. Died,_____” On one side of the monument facing both graves, he had chiseled these words: “Arrayed in the conflict, in strife and dismay, One wore blue, The other gray. Time brought its changes. We two came to know The joy which true friendship in life can bestow”. And so, at last, the blue came to sleep beside the gray.”
The honoring will be at 6 PM,
Wednesday, 30 May 07, at Woodlawn Cemetery, 1500 N. Las Vegas Blvd. Per
information from Al Peterson, PDC, PCC, and man in charge, the guest speaker
will be Mr. Frank Fieldler of KLAV Radio, 1230 AM, “ Lets Talk Las Vegas”.
Opening ceremonies will be by William B. Keith Camp 12 Commander Don Hotchkiss,
who along with Penny Husson will lay a wreath upon Keiths grave. Greetings
on behalf of the Daughters of Union Veterans will be from Penny Husson. Company
B., 1st Nevada Vol. Infantry will present the colors and also provide a 21
gun salute. Dr. John Minor, Commander of Silver State Grays Camp 1989, Sons
of the Confederate Veterans.
